Diane Truong, MD, FAAP

Dr. Truong is a mom of one daughter and one son, a pediatrician in a multispecialty group practice  in Southern California, and co-founder of Baby Silk, the first personal care line for babies developed by pediatrician-moms.

How many children do you have? My daughter is 16 and a sophomore in high school. My son is 12 and he’s in seventh grade.

What’s your specialty? I’m a board-certified pediatrician.

What’s your favorite parenting tip? Parent by example. I think the values kids grow up with are the ones that they observe at home. My parents rose to the challenge of starting life in a new country as immigrants and observing that really impressed upon me that hard work and strong family values prevail. My husband and I try to practice what we preach.  For example, we respect our parents, and teach our kids to do likewise toward their grandparents…with the hope that this would carry over to how they will relate to us, once we’re older.

What has surprised you most about parenting? How much I love being a parent, at each stage of my kids’ development. I wanted to be a pediatrician because I melted at the sight of babies—even just pictures of babies. I knew that I would cherish my kids’ baby stage. But I wasn’t sure how I’d handle the stubborn impulsive erratic behavior of growing children. I do miss cuddling them as infants, but I’ve absolutely enjoyed being a parent through all of their milestones.

How do you get your kids to eat healthy food? I introduced all types of healthy foods early in their childhood. Our rule is that they don’t have to eat everything, but they have to at least try a new food before declining it.

I’m happy to say that my kids love to eat all different foods from all different cultures. When we travel, they never order off the kids’ menu. They eat what the locals eat.

How do you work exercise into your family’s life? My son is a jock. He loves sports—both watching and playing them. My daughter plays tennis, my husband swims and we both walk the dogs.

How do you recharge your batteries? I go to the gym, and I also love to curl up on the sofa and read a good novel.

Dr. Truong’s Q&As

I’m in my third trimester and concerned about preterm labor. Did you have it and what did you do?

My husband is a nervous wreck that I’m going to call him home from work thinking I’m in labor but it will be a false alarm. Did that happen to you?
