An Interview with Dr. Ayala

What’s your favorite parenting tip? Teach your baby to fall asleep by himself, in his own bed.

What has surprised you most about parenting? The incredible unconditional love you give and get with your kids.  There’s nothing to prepare you for the depth of this emotion.

How do you get your kids to eat healthy food? My home is a safe haven of healthy food (and a little bit of really indulgent desserts that we eat in moderation).  I cook, serve and eat almost nothing but healthy food, and that’s what my kids grow up thinking food should be.

How do you work exercise into your family’s life? We’re an active family, and we spend much of our free time outdoors: playing backyard sports, tennis, walking, and hiking.

How do you recharge your batteries? Nature and the arts always lift me up! A walk in the woods, painting, or attending a good performance remind me how big and wonderful the world is and how mundane my troubles are.

I have a three-month-old daughter, and caring for her takes so much time and energy, I have little left for anyone else, especially my husband. But he’s a grown-up, right, he can cope! How did you and your husband make it through this hard time?

My maternity leave is almost over, and I have to put my baby in daycare. How you do deal with the guilt?

How much TV did you let your toddlers watch?

Did you let your toddler use computers?
