An Interview with Dr. Mayer

What’s your favorite parenting tip? I find it helpful to read a little from the Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff books every morning to keep things in perspective.  Or you could make a journal of your favorite quotes and read some each morning.

What surprised you most about parenting? How emotionally challenging it can be. It’s hands-down more difficult than my entire medical training! I think that’s because I have to swallow my pride and keep my type-A personality in check to be the kind of mommy I want to be.

How do you get your kids to eat healthy food? I gave my toddlers lots of fresh fruit to eat. But sometimes fruits like strawberries can be tart, and my kids wouldn’t want to eat them. Rather than sprinkling sugar on top, I drizzled a bit of agave nectar.

You can buy agave nectar at health foods stores and even in the natural foods section of larger grocery stores. Nectar is from the agave plant and is all natural/not processed. It’s sweeter than sugar, so you save calories by only using a tiny bit to sweeten up anything.

Even though my kids were good eaters, I still gave them a multivitamin each day. My dentist said that gummy vitamins are bad for their teeth because they get stuck in the grooves. I gave my kids the harder, chewable vitamins instead, such as Flintstone’s.

How do you work exercise into your life? I wake up a half hour early and do an exercise tape before showering and getting the kids on the bus. I do super fun dance/kick boxing type DVDs set to awesome music called “turbojam” from www.beachbody.com.  They seriously changed my life.

It is all about good time-management, and I simply don’t have the time or motivation to go to the gym.

How do you recharge your batteries? I enjoy turbo-jam DVDs, outside activities with family, a book club with friends, playing piano, playing with my dog, settling down with a good book every night, and an early bedtime!
