An Interview with Dr. McKenney

What’s your favorite parenting tip? One of my good friends who is also a family physician and also recently had a baby told me her mantra was “Whatever it takes!” in response to asking her if it was ok to try different places for the baby to sleep in order to get her to sleep.  My other favorite tip is:  “Even though you’re giving her a little bit of formula at night, she’s still a breastfed baby.”  Breastfeeding my baby has been very important to me, so I needed to hear this!

What has surprised you most about parenting? I’ve been surprised by how exhausting it is and how well a person can actually function on such little sleep!

How do you get your kids to eat healthy food? I think this one is N/A yet!

How do you work exercise into your family’s life? I’m still working on this one.  Breastfeeding and being back at work has definitely helped me to shed any extra baby weight, but I’ve got to get rid of my flabbing tummy still! My husband and I have already made plans to take turns watching our baby while the other one exercises.  Team efforts are always best when possible!

How do you recharge your batteries? I try to get back to doing the things I love like cooking, taking care of patients, and volunteering my time by talking with the local kids at school about medicine and health, doing speaking programs for my former residency, and staying active in organizations with which I’m involved such as the Kansas Academy of Family Physicians and American Academy of Family Physicians.  And at home, I recharge by sitting with my husband, daughter, 2 dogs, and 2 cats on our couch and watching KU basketball or CSI reruns!
