An Interview with Dr. Simon

What’s your favorite parenting tip? People underestimate the effect of swaddling. You need to know how to do this! Ask the nurses in the hospital to give you a crash course. They get those babies snug as a bug in a rug. Babies sleep so much better when they’re nice and warm and snug.

What has surprised you most about parenting? Being a doctor did not prepare me for being a mother. If anything, it made me more paranoid.

How do you get your kids to eat healthy food? My daughter has never had a problem with eating. One thing that was interesting, is she didn’t like stage 3 baby food. So I simply kept her on stage 2 longer. Sometimes you have to use trial and error to find out what works with each kid.

How do you work exercise into your family’s life? I do try to do yoga with my baby and now my neighborhood has mommy and me exercise classes, which would have been great to bring my baby to a class where the teacher didn’t mind listening to crying babies.

How do you recharge your batteries? My husband and I are very good at reading each other and knowing when we need a break. He’ll say, “Why don’t you go to the gym? I’ll watch the baby.” Or he’ll encourage me to meet a friend for lunch, and I do the same for him. We try to do as many things together as a family as we can, but you need time away too. It’s important to give your partner that time to recharge.
