How many children do you have?  One child, a five-year-old son

What’s your specialty?  Emergency medicine

What’s your favorite parenting tip?  Allow yourself to get lost in their world every now and then. It will make all the sleepless, busy moments much more tolerable.

What has surprised you most about parenting?  How I can be so great at my career and the rest of life, but feel so clueless about parenting somedays. I always felt like I was a patient person, but parenting has shown me that that is not always true!

How do you get your kids to eat healthy food?  His first foods were only fruits and vegetables from six months old to one year before introducing anything else. I like to think we trained his palate that way. Now, we don’t make eating vegetables an option. We’re pretty strict about it. But, typically, he sees us eat vegetables, so he eats them.

How do you work exercise into your family’s life?  We go outside and play sports with him whenever possible. This spring, members of my immediate and extended family did a 5k run and 3k walk in the spring while he cheered for us. Then did his own kiddie race. The gym I belong to also has a kid’s program so he gets to work out while I work out.

How do you recharge your batteries?  My friends and I make it a point to take a girl’s trip at least once a year to someplace relaxing or fun. I also try to do something special for myself at least once a month – whether a massage, taking a sailing course, going dancing at a nightclub, or any other idea that seems fun or relaxing. In more recent months, I’ve learned to accept that not everything will get done perfectly and my only goal is to do my best and to aim to complete at least one thing well.

Dr. Reid’s Q&As

I’m in my first trimester, and my pants are getting snug. What did you do for maternity clothes?

I’m in my first trimester, and I am craving mustard-flavored pretzels all of the time. Before being pregnant, I didn’t even like them! Is this normal?
