You’re Gonna Miss These Days

My son Tyler (age five) is in kindergarten, and I was so fortunate to be able to his school’s Mother’s Tea yesterday. I cherish every second that I get a glimpse into his school, to see him interact with his friends and what his experience is like. I had a wonderful time at the tea, and I’ll always remember how proud and happy I was of him.

I took my camera along, figuring we’d be allowed to take pictures. I’ve been surprised by new rules though restricting photos such as at my other son’s preschool, but I was hopeful we could take pictures at the tea, and we could. What I bring, though, was my video camera. I was a little sad to see other moms videotaping the adorable songs the kindergartners sang. I had thought briefly about bringing my video camera, but I was afraid that might be overboard. I know I’ll remember a lot about their sweet songs, but I wish I had the video. Plus I would have enjoyed sharing it with my husband. Note to self: Next time, remember the video camera!!

Say “Cheese”

It’s hard to believe, but Austin, my “baby,” will turn four years old in a few weeks! When I look at him, I still see a beautiful baby, but I’m sure other people see a handsome little boy.

When my older son, Tyler, (age five), was born a dear friend of mine gave me a membership to a photo place called the Picture People. I took Tyler there each month his first year to have his photo taken. My husband thought I was nuts. Each month, I bought a sheet of wallet-sized photos and two 5X7s. I sent wallets to my parents, in-laws, each of our siblings, and a few close friends. We sent one 5X7 to my inlaws, who live far from here, and I saved the other 5X7 to hang on our wall.

Lo and behold, after a few short months, our family started to ask us, “Where’s this month’s photo?” They didn’t think it was silly at all, and they enjoyed seeing our baby grow as much as we did. After that first year, I’ve had Tyler’s photo taken once a year on his birthday. Then when Austin was born, I did the same: I had his photo taken once a month for his first year and then once a year after that. Each year at Christmas, I have their photos taken together to send out with cards.

I have to admit, I’ve spent many agonizing moments at the Picture Place, and now Portrait Innovations, which opened up closer to my home, about the cost. But in hindsight, I haven’t regretted a single cent that I spent on those photos. They are precious to me.

TIme to make the appointment for Austin’s photo! I can’t wait!

I Love Pudding; It’s Slimy

When my older son, Tyler, was born, I bought a baby calendar and posted it on the bulletin board over my desk. Each day I tried to write a few words–either a funny thing Tyler did (or later, said), a milestone he reached, or something we did that day.

It’s amazing how hard it is to find the time to just write a few words, and as time has gone on I miss more and more days. When Austin (now three) was born, I added a second calendar to my bulletin board. After their first years, I just buy regular calendars; now I buy Disney ones, my favorite!

Now that the boys are older, more often than not, I write funny things that they say. Otherwise I’ll never remember them! Just now, I ran in here because Austin, who’s eating chocolate pudding for a snack said, “I love pudding; it’s slimy.” Earlier today, we were shopping, and Tyler called Starbucks “Starwars.” Priceless!
