Susan Kiley

Susan is a mom and the owner of Splendipity and PeekaDid Brands.

How many children do you have and what are their ages? Brianna is six, Aaron is five, Noah is three, and Jayden is one year old (guardian).

How did you come up with the idea for your product/company/book/website? Like most inventors or go-getters, I needed a product that would keep our baby safe; satisfy my mother (a labor & delivery nurse) and my husband (physician); and be something I would be proud to share with others. We had several years of heartache trying to conceive, but through modern medicine and a lot of faith we had our daughter in 2005. We had been told so many times about SIDS, overheating, UV rays, and every other danger in our environment, that we felt we needed to “invent” something to keep her safe. So my mom and I created the cover, which if you look back in history there is designs out there from the early 1960s and 1970s, so it is technically a re-invention, by putting a twist on it by making it the only organic and multi-functional (six different uses) cover to be used all year round while not costing a fortune.

What’s your favorite parenting tip? Do as I did, you didn’t turn out so bad! Actually, we try not to listen to any of the parenting advice we get because every child, situation and family is unique and we feel it is easier for us to wait until a situation happens before we react or just do what comes naturally and go with the flow. It may not always be “right” but it’s a learning experience for us, all of us as parents and for the children.

How do you get your family to eat healthy food and/or exercise? Exercise is not a problem. We are a very active outdoor family, even during rain, wind, snow and all the other Midwest conditions. We love being outdoors and being active. Eating is our biggest challenge. I have a very picky eater—a very, very picky eater. We have slowly made progress with her over the past year or so. The boys will try almost anything, all the kids love fruits, and my five-year-old loves veggies!

How do you recharge your batteries? I love gardening, reading, playing board games, and traveling, and my most recent way to recharge is the spa! I always had a stigma about the spa and when I was given a spa day gift for my 37th birthday, I feel in love with it. When you have a family and career or business, it’s difficult to find time to balance, so days at the spa are far and few between!
