Tangela Walker-Craft

Tangela is president of Simply Necessary, Incorporated and Inventor of the GoPillow, small, comfortable nursing pillows and pillows for toddlers.

How did you come up with the idea for your product? I needed a breastfeeding pillow that was small and comfortable. I also wanted it to be portable. The original intent of the pillow was for cradling babies for breast or bottle feedings. I figured if I could create what I was looking for it would be an excellent travel pillow for babies and kids. The idea for adding the privacy blanket came later. It was added after I was caught in a crowded area during a rainstorm at Disney World in Orlando, FL. My husband ended giving me his shirt so that I could nurse my daughter discreetly. We realized that a privacy blanket or cover-up would separate our pillow from any other nursing pillow on the market. The built-in blanket turned the pillow into a multi-purpose wonder! The GoPillow! solved several problems that mothers often run into when away from home with a baby or toddler. The pillows are professionally manufactured and packaged.

How many children do you have and what age groups?  I have one 8-year-old daughter.

What’s your favorite parenting tip?  Read to your baby every day until he or she can read on his or her own. Then read with your child as often as possible. Choose books with large, bold type so that the words can be seen easily by young eyes.

What has surprised you most about parenting?  I have been surprised by how much my daughter mirrors my behaviors. It has shown me the best and the worst of my character and caused me to try to be a better person.

How do you get your kids to eat healthy food?  My daughter is very smart so we talk about the food groups and why certain foods are better than others. We talk about how the foods she eats now will determine her health in the future. We try to eat healthy as a family.

How do you work exercise into your family’s life? We take frequent walks together. We workout with fitness shows on television and with DVDs that we’ve purchased. We have just added a Wii to our household. It has made getting up and moving more frequent and more fun!

How do you recharge your batteries?  I pray and read Christian literature. I spend time doing “kid” things with my daughter. My husband, daughter, and I check out old episodes of classic television shows like The Waltons and classic movies from the library to watch together.
